Stage One: The Story Often Comes Before the Script

Before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set, somebody has already worked out which story is worth the risk. If you trace a few hits back to their roots, you often come across a book at the start of the chain. The novel Shutout by Jami Davenport is the source for ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort launched https://shortreels.org/ on November 1, 2025, is adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. Korea’s 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, carrying a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. Several app owners also operate reading businesses, so source material sits close at hand: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. When no book exists, writers turn to reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. The script has a single job: to condense a long drama story into scenes that each land a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Recognizable Faces

Casting is the place where the format’s economics become visible on screen. Browsing the cast lists for short series on IMDb, you notice the same names appearing again and again. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman led two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. Having a following on one app, a lead gets a head start at the next title, and that counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox operates a production team in Los Angeles. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so producers are also casting with a specific viewer in mind.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

TheWrap puts the typical cost of a Western short drama at $150,000 to $300,000 per series, with filming lasting eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is much the same, placing $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days means, if you do the arithmetic. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported slimmer numbers still, with Jiuzhou Culture putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. According to Jiuzhou, about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. The expensive shoot happens only once, since dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series.

Stage Four: Editing Down to 60–100 Seconds

Editors slice the footage into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. Each episode is structured around a question the next one promises to answer, since at that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot. What pulls you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, the house style. A 70-episode series adds up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time once those segments are put together. Episode counts vary widely by title; GoodShort’s official pages, for example, list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Viewers who never open the app can still see the same footage, because ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Put another way, editors cut video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls

The final creative decision is commercial too. The first eight to ten episodes are free under the standard model TheWrap describes. ReelShort’s own blog notes its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, while TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes are unlocked with coins; ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog, or buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. Because prices differ by platform, country and promotion, your store may display something different. Placement is the contentious part, because paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and better avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series

With the newest production stage, the camera is gone entirely. ReelShort now streams animated motion comics alongside its live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. Don’t confuse it with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series with the same title. DramaWave has gone farthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line

Fox Entertainment is the most obvious example of established studios taking notice. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, received an equity investment from Fox. Across two years, Fox also pledged to make more than 200 vertical titles. Included in the Fox-produced series already on the app are Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. In January 2026, Holywater raised a further $22 million in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer commits to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Quick Glance

Placed side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. The shoot is the expensive, fixed block, and much of the rest is arranged around it. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces anchor the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall drive the edit. Although fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to summarize typical time and cost at each stage. Instead of guessing, it says so where no reliable figure has been published.

Production stage Typical time and cost What goes on
Source material and script No public figure A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice comes from Shutout, Bound by Honor from Cora Reilly’s novel
Cast selection No public figure Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this step

Edit Episodes of 60–100 seconds The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
